Wagner's Dream

I saw all four of the new Ring Cycle during the MetOpera Live in HD season and loved each of them. Even so, it took this documentary about the creation of "The Machine" and building the magnificent productions for me to more fully appreciate the genius of Robert LePage, the courage and vision of Peter Gelb, and the bravery of the cast members of each of the four operas, over and above their respective artistries. Following the creation of the Machine from the first models to opening night of Das Rheingold and beyond, the Machine itself became important enough to me that watching the Encore! performance of Das Rheingold last night, the Machine became almost alive and an integral part of the production's "family." The creators and the operators alike deserve standing ovations, and my hearty thanks to the producers of this documentary for helping me understand what a marvel the Machine is!

Very interesting "making of" documentary of how the Mets new Ring cycle production was put together, with special emphasis on its fantastic scenery machine. Also contains several very interesting interviews with some of the principles Highly recommended, especally if you intend to attend the four operas.

nowhere near as good as The Audition - the music was the best part - very disjointed - jumped around a lot - the most fun thing apart from that was the clip from the Wagner Society event which i attended and where Robert Lepage was much more informative, inspiring and convincing far too much emphasis on Peter Gelb as the savior of the Met - the Donald Trump of Opera, one might say stick with the operas and go to the encores - in Live in HD

Movie was fascinating. Not only was it interesting to see how the "machine" was built and used for the Ring Cycle, but it was inspiring to see how the Met rose above all the setbacks they experienced (and there were plenty) to still succeed in staging this masterpiece.

If you like Opera, this is a must see account of the development of the new production of Wagner's Ring Cycle with emphasis on the set design, the important players in all facets of the production and the trials and tribulations of pulling off such a monumental undertaking. The movie was fascinating from beginning to end.
