When vampires fall in love at the box office, they mean business. To no one's real surprise, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 opened to big numbers last weekend, grabbing $141 million, which wasn't very far off from my own prediction of $140 million. But Bella and Edward shouldn't feel too comfortable in their top spot because the Thanksgiving holiday is bringing a host of new movies to devour at your local multiplex. Let's take a closer look …
What's The Scoop: A remake of the '80s movie (minus The Swayze) in which a group of teenagers defend their hometown from an invasion of North Korean (instead of Russian) soldiers.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Decent buzz and a pretty solid cast (Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Josh Peck, Adrianne Palicki, Jeffrey Dean Morgan) make for an entertaining remake, and one that may do well with those looking for more big-screen action after overdosing on Skyfall.
Rise of the Guardians
What's The Scoop: Imagine The Avengers, except it's animated and instead of a team of superheroes, we have a team of mythical figures like Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Jack Frost and the Sandman teaming up to fight evil around the globe.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: With the holidays on our doorstep, and the kids looking to keep busy while their parents shop till they drop on Black Friday, this is the perfect movie to help inject a little holiday spirit into those young and old. (It opening on 3500 screens won't hurt either.)
Life of Pi
What's The Scoop: Ang Lee directs this visually stunning adaptation of the popular novel by Yann Martel, in which a boy survives a disaster at sea only to find himself lost in the ocean alongside a Bengal tiger.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: A considerable amount of awards buzz and the promise of a tale that warms the heart and wows the eyes may be just what the movie doctor ordered for those not looking forward to a long, arduous holiday season full of shopping, eating and then more shopping.
My Prediction: It'll be a good fight between Breaking Dawn – Part 2 and Rise of the Guardians, but I expect the final Twilight movie to pull out at least one more victory before riding off into the sun, er, moonlight.
My Pick of the Week: In limited release you have Silver Linings Playbook (on 420 screens), which is getting a ton of Oscar buzz for the movie itself, and for Jennifer Lawrence as best actress. David O. Russell (The Fighter) is great at delivering these blue-collar romantic dramas, and if it's playing near you I highly recommend seeking this one out.
Alright, now it's your turn – sound off and let us know what you'll be watching over holiday break, and which movie you think will win the box office.
