    Rourke in Tune Again

    by Robert Shanahan

Mickey Rourke was intoxicating in this deep character study of a wrestler Randy 'The Ram' Robinson. In this film we see the progression of a man trying to get his life back together any way he can. He is loved in the boxing world but cannot seem to be loved by his own daughter. Darren Arnofsky finally makes a mainstream film which audiences can somewhat relate to. His earlier work, Requiem for a Dream was phenomenal but much too much for a normal audience to stomach. Here, Arnofsky gets us involved in a character who in the end we truly care about. As a wrestler, Randy cannot resist the allure of the ring and has trouble in normal life, but then again, who doesn't. Rourke finally got his career back on track with this film and I am excited to see what else Arnofsky will conjure up.

    Was expecting more

    by RandytheMovieFan

One great performance in a story that turned out to be not particularly exciting to watch. It certainly was gruesome at times, but I was hoping for something more captivating. Probably had my expectations too high given all the pre-Oscars hype. Marisa Tomei sure looked awesome for her 40+ years, and Evan Rachel Wood was properly aggrieved as the abandoned daughter, but their roles seemed very superficial to me. It was all about showcasing Mickey Rourke, and he delivered a performance that will be remembered for a long time. If that's enough for it, it will make for a decent rental.

    This is an award winner!?

Going to see this movie I was expecting a movie in the same vein as Rocky, Slumdog Millionaire, Good Will Hunting where the message is 'Yes you can have bad situations but if you keep fighting and don't give up you can win' however this film was the exact opposite 'Your life sucks and it will always suck, the lesson here is never try'
Rourke's character I felt sympathetic towards because I wanted him to shatter the movie's idea of 'old dogs cant learn new tricks' and too see him make a comeback in the world of wrestling as it were with a renewed spirit. Instead his life was great then it went downhill. I will admit his moment with trying to reconnect with his daughter was touching but then a few scenes later that moment gets tossed aside. Overall, my review great actor, good idea for plot, bad execution and depressing feel to it all.

    Wow!

This is why we go to the movies. To be moved and be sucked in so much that even when you remind yourself that this is just a movie, you quickly fall into its trap again. And you love it!!! Should have been nominated for best picture. A must see.
