Beautifully drawn. Narrative jumps around a little too much and I'd like to see the principal character age a bit over the 20 years to so the film covers. I'd also like to NOT see some much cigarette smoking, even though it's very prevalent in Japan. Totally agreed with the political statements about wonderful inventions being converted to military purposes.

My 12-year old son and I went to see this Ghibli Studios production, and I was amazed by the visuals on every level. The coloring is spectacular, the storyline engaging, and the emotion very real. It is a great movie with good lessons and spectacular imagery.

this really is his master piece, he poured everything in him to make this film and it shows. the animation is breath taking, the vistas are breath taking, the art is breath taking, and the story is simple but very well written and will keep you invested all through the two- two and a half hour run time. this is Miyazaki at the top of his craft, and it would be a disservice for any Miyazaki fan and fans of films in general to never see this movie.

Great movie, the animation is amazing, and unusual for Miyazaki because the characters are historical figures, not beings of an imaginary world.
I really wish this was not supposed to be his last film. 5 stars.

Animation as art has never been so enchanting as seen in Hayao Miyazaki films. Based upon a true character who created the Zero fighter. While being nominated for Academy Awards... he never wins because he is not sucking tit in Hollywood. This film never had a chance with its pro Japanese perspective that encompasses the great Tokyo earthquake and fire, TB epidemic and WWII. I loved every bit of this film... the message was not lost upon those who are not Japanese... but Japanese can be proud of this work that does not just try to demonize Japan and Nazi Germany... it was not about war but about vision and creativity as a man has a window of only 10 years for his best creative work which is sadly true. Miyazaki son must now carry on the legacy and deal with Disney as distributor.
I think it would be powerful to have Miyazaki make a film about Hiroshima.
