Richard Jenkins is superb in the film. The relationships he forges with Terek and his family feel more authentic than some real life relationships feel. The emotions he has toward these people are so intense, one can only join him and his compassion for these accidental friends. Amazing movie and Sean Penn should be ashamed for accepting that Oscar, give it up for Jenkins.
Writer/director Tom McCarthy's THE VISITOR totally took me by amazing surprise as did character actor Richard Jenkins' incredibly understated and impeccably nuanced performance as Walter Vale - a man totally thrust into a new set of life circumstances when he meets two illegal aliens who are taking up residence in his NYC apartment. Slowly he is drawn into their plights as individuals seeking asylum, most notably Takim - a Syrian percussionist who is wrongly detained after a misunderstanding in a subway station. Jenkins deftly unearths the humanity in his character who has so withdrawn from life after his talented wife dies and now is re-emerging with a new zest for life as Takim introduces him to the empowering pleasures of playing African drums. Many touching scenes follow as everyone attempts to fight for what is fair in just, but the movie never falters in showing the truth in situations and never taking the cloying Hollywood ending! Exceptionally well-done and marvelous support!
Very powerful performances by all 4 actors. Richard Jenkins was incredible as a just getting through life college professor. The story of the struggle with immigration was very insightful and moving, yet at some parts just boring. But overall, you need to see this at least once
quite moving and realistic. a must see. definitely tears at your heart. sad to know it's happening more than others are aware of. wish there were some grace period to investigate the character of the detente. it's a shame there is no compassion shown from the authorities.
I loved this movie and highly recommend it. It is well written, well acted, and touching. If you enjoy human interest stories, and enjoy New York City as the backdrop, then go see the movie.
