  A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

  I just saw the free press preview of this 1.5 hour laugh-fest B-'horror' flick adaptation of the novel with the same title..
  
  The three positive things I have to say about 'The Ruins' are:-
  1) Jena Malone (Pride and Prejudice) gave a nice performance.
  2) The movie was THANKFULLY short.
  3) It was hilarious - almost like a self-deprecating parody of cliches and bad dialogues.
  
  Plot? WHAT plot???
  
  A group of friends decided to go check-out a off-the-beaten path ruin in search of missing persons. And yes, you probably knew this already, they started dying one after the other - suc***bing to some climbing questing succulent, & etc... (nah, I won't spoil it for you).
  
  And that's basically THE story. Period.
  
  Oh, majority of the audience were laughing themselves silly throughout the movie.
  
  The movie suffered from a really lame weak ending as well.
  
  Don't RUIN your movie-going experience, pick another movie to see or wait for the DVD-release rental(likely in a month or so).

  THE WORST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  I signed up for this website just because I had to say this was the worst movie I have ever seen. Absolutely no horror, no background, the "bad" element of the film is a total joke. This film is more gory than anything and even the gory parts are kind of a joke. The acting is okay, the cinematography is nothing special, it's just super lame. It took everything I had in me to sit through the whole movie. I haven't seen the book but I am certain someone would find this crap compared to a novel.
  
  Don't waste your time or money I wouldn't even rent it on DVD.

  Important to know...

  ...what kind of movie you are about to see. Personally, I knew it would be a thrill ride with lots of bumps (and goosebumps!) along the way. However, a few people in the theater got up and left about 1/3 of the way through - obviously upset that they weren't at the movie they thought they came to see. This is not a movie about archaeological digs or even ancient Mayan history. It is a very well done and intense film about the strengths and weaknesses of a group of young people who happen upon an unfortunate situation during what up until their last day - was a fun and frivolous Spring Break in Mexico. I enjoyed it for it's fresh take on "scary" and its lack of the normal unnecessary elements which are usually thrown in for flavor (don't worry, there ARE bikinis). This movie doesn't need all of that. It stands solid on its story alone and made me want to pick up the book it was based on for more. So now you know what this film is and what it isn't. So go! The Ruins await.

  A Total Waste

  I had high hopes for this movie! Boy was I wrong! I have been a Horror fan as long as I can remember and I would have to put this movie in the same line as Stay Alive or The Undead. It did have its gory moments, but that was pretty much it?! No background on the Ruins or why it is the way it is. They just threw in a few innocent teens in some Mayan pyramid and watched them try to keep us entertained. Oh well, wait for the DVD release. Trust me!

  a mess!

  no surprise...
  another horrible adaptation of a decent novel
  i shudder to think how much money was wasted producing
  this stinky pile of dreck
  i couldn't muster any sympathy for the flat, clichéd characters
  
  the big payoff was the taunting flowers
  and they worked much better on the page.
  
  stay away from the ruins!!!

  "JUNK MOVIE."

  The Ruins basically played like a DVD view. A waste to watch it on the big screen. Yea, there's the gore/violence but the story was rushed and the characters were just not interesting.
  Don't bother seeing at the local multi-plex. Wait for a DVD release and don't buy the flick..."Rent it."

  ruined a great book

  i read the book this movie was based oon recently and it was fantastic...i was so excited to see the movie ..the only aspect of the book they captured was the goriness which they surrounded by bland acting and a frankly moronic screenplay ..the movie was needlessly boring and drawn out could have been made into a way better movie by chimps in clown suits .....thumbs down

  PLEASE WAIT UNITL YOU HAVE ACTUALLY SEEN THE MOVIE TO REVIEW IT!!!! I am tired of getting on here and trying to find out honest fans reviews and then have people saying how they think the movie is going to be amazing or how it will be awful before they have even seen the movie. I am trying to obtain objective fan reviews from people who have actually gone to see the movie, NOT some person telling me their inmpression of the previews. So for the love of God please wait to rate the movie until you have actually watched it!!!!!!!!!!!!

  Should have asked for my money back

  I decided to take in a movie at the last minute and ended up seeing this awful movie. It is, without question, one of the most awful, trite, dull, asinine movies I've ever wasted money on. If you're into an incredibly STUPID script, lots of blood and gore, this may be for you. The sooner this is yanked out of theaters, the better for everyone. I'm only sorry I didn't ask for my money back.

  Excellet Film!!!

  First off I'm a big horror buff, and I personally thought this was one of the best horror movies to come out in a while. Granted it wasn't jump out of your seat scary, but the psychological aspect was frightening enough, and the storyline was somewhat original. The dialouge wasn't campy and the acting was actually good and believable. I enjoyed this movie to the full extent and suggest that anyone and everyone who enjoys a good horror movie to go see this one. However, if you're looking for buckets of blood and a realisitc killer this one may not be for you. I personally had a great time and will probably go see it at least one more time.

  I thought this movie was very original. Well acted, and from a horror perspective - reasonable choices by the acting leads....for the most part. I couldn't have asked for a better movie based on what I expected from the previews, ads, etc.

  The Ruins

  As much as I usually think scary movies are so-so to oh no, this movie was decent. The idea of killer plants was dumb to me but much to my surprise it was more scarier than I thought. This movie isn't the jump out of your seat scary though, more of the "ah-i-want-to-cover-my-eyes-but-i-cant-because-my-eyes-are-stuck-to-the-screen-scary" (sorry that was kind of long). There are gruesome parts where I could feel the pain too. I read other peoples reviews and a lot of people said oh no because they didnt like the end, well the ending to most scary films aren't that great so you should already know that. The acting wasn't as weak as other people say it is. It's so-so but common who can act perfectly when they're staring in a killer plant movie. Overall, you can wait for this when it comes on dvd or for rent or if you have a free movie ticket. I dont regret buying th ticket for full price though.
