The Queen is desperately seeking an audience

Although it is clear to see why Helen Mirren wins an oscar for her portrayal of the part, it is difficult to see why this ever met with a theater. It is a wild tale based on some loosely taken true events and a lot of false ones. The tale seems insulting to the royals, whom are apparently so stuck in the past that they see Diana as an adversary even in death. Interesting yes, but wait and see it on HBO.

I've always been a huge Helen Mirren fan, from her previous film work and her "Prime Suspect" TV work for the BBC. Since this performance won her the Oscar, this role could be seen as a benchmark for her. From the obvious physical transformation to her restrained, almost pained expressions as the tragic events unfold around her, she seems to respond and move with an ease and grace that befits, well, a queen. James Cromwell, in my opinion, was miscast as Prince Phillip, as was Alex Jennings as Prince Charles. However, Michael Sheen was a keen and sympathetic Tony Blair. I would like to think that this film was somewhat historicallly accurate. All in all, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see a thoughtful, subtle moving film.

Helen Mirren richly deserved her Oscar. The movie, while well-crafted, was rather ho-hum, but I wouldn't have missed her performance.
