I'm torn over this high concept movie. The Purge does not lack in creating edge-of-your-seat tension. There are 4 or 5 high impact scenes and the movie incorporates a nice twist.
So what's the problem? The journey to the good bits can be summarized as "painful." The Purge is supposed to distill human nature down to its purest, most primal form. What's actually depicted couldn't be further from reality. None of the actions of the characters are believable. You will loathe the characters you're supposed sympathize with.
Even a sub one hour and thirty minute run time seemed too long to get to the meat of the movie. The nameless, disposable purge victim being cast as a black man seems like a gadget to ensure the audience doesn't care about his outcome versus the family's. I won't give this a no, but watch at your own risk.
There is news commentary during the start of the credits regarding the purge

I have never written a movie review for Fandango but decided to do so with The Purge because I want to warn everyone that if you have seen the ads on TV then you have seen the best part of the movie. The movie is very slow and in some parts dull and very uninteresting. As I watched this movie I couldn't believe that this was the same movie I had been waiting to see for a long time...REALLY. This is the best they could do....The plot was weird and very predictable and it was just downright horrible...YUCK

I never felt the need to write a review about any movie, and believe you me, I've seen my share of movies. This movie is by far the biggest waste of time. Great setting, but absolutely no plot, no sense of direction. I assume monkeys were holding the camera during the fight scenes; the only parts of the movie that were remotely interesting! From irrational, hyper-emotional characters who kept talking over each other to 1984-like brainwashed self-righteous punks (mind you, the lead villain was The Joker without make-up), this movie was just plain awful. Do yourself a favor and save your money. The only good thing about this movie was that it wasn't long.

The Good: The premise of the story was actually pretty good. For 12hrs, 1 night of the year, all crime including murder is legal. A family gets terrorized because their son tried to do a good deed and save someone's life.
The Bad: Really didn't care for the ending. Seems like there should have been more to it. Basically, in my opinion, this movie was a amped up version "The Strangers". I also call into question about the sitution and how people can change when under duress.
The Ugly: I give it 3 Stars at best. The movie definitely worth renting, but not spending the money that going to the movies would cost.
Notable Upcoming Trailers Shown:
2 Guns with Denzel Washington. & Mark Wahlberg..looks halfway decent
Paranoria with Gary Oldman and a BALD Harrison Ford...Looks promising.

In my opinion I thought this movie was good. My husband and I saw it and we liked it. It makes you think as well as make you ask yourself, "What is the one crime I would do if I was given the chance to for one whole night?" If you are thinking of taking your teenagers to see it, make sure they are over 16 because this is not a movie for anyone younger than 16.
