Not Ground-Breaking, But Still Entertaining

While the film is far from ground-breaking, if you enjoy movies in the genre, "The Possession" isn't a bad choice to go and see. It's mildly creepy throughout, but the ending is pretty intense. Try to go when there isn't going to be a theater filled with teenage girls. They scream at everything and then laugh about it for the next five minutes. Ugh...

We enjoyed it

There were several good jump out your seat scenes. The effects were subtle yet disturbing. Being it was referenced to a true story made it intriguing. Acting was good. Though my friend found it predictable, I thought after one sees a thousand scary movies, it is hard for a movie to NOT be predictable! Go see it! It is worth the fee of a movie for sure!

Raimi Almost Rivals The Exorcist...

Sam Raimi has a good track record and rarely lets me down. The Possession was no different. It succeeds on nearly every level. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays the distracted but loving father, Kyra Sedgwick turns in a truly inspired performance as the ex wife and mother trying not to be bitter and move on. Our two little stars however were Madison Davenport as Hannah and Natasha Calis as Em; both two bright young stars with talent beyond their years. The real surprise here for me came in the brilliant casting of Matisyahu as Rabbi Tzadok. Easily pulling off a very believable Jewish version of an exorcism. It brought back memories of Max Von Sydow's performance in The Excorcist. The story moved along at a steady pace with the scares coming in Raimi's signature style. The movie would get a five star rating from me if not for the very end. We all knew what cliche could present, but hoped it wouldn't. Alas, it happened so I left disappointed. The last 15 seconds that shouldn't have been.

I have seen alot of worse movies than The possession and with that being said the movie is really not so bad. For a pg-13 flcik I didn't think much about it but after about 45 mins through the movie i thought that the movie sunk in and had me drawn in.It also helps that a strong lead like Jeffrey Dean Morgan is an A + actor and carried the film the whole way. It is a great date movie and intresting enough to keep you in the seat.

The Acting Saves It

Possession has a mediocre storyline, but it is the excellent acting that makes it worth seeing. Don't expect a lot of horror or jump out of your seat moments. it's more of a family drama with a touch of scary. Anyone that has been divorced will experience poignant recognition of a few key moment, such as deleting of the husband's emails from the wife's computer. The actors make this worth seeing, as the "scary horror lovers" will find it a bit lacking in the scare department.
