Very well acted, beautiful cinematography

This is a serious movie, not Hollywood formula, and so, perhaps not for everybody. All the actors were very good, including most surprisingly, Eve Mendes. Impressive cinematography given the somewhat grimy side of small town America that is the setting and in a way, a character in the movie. There are big themes at play here, including "sins of the father" and moral ambiguity. Are any of these characters "all bad?" I really enjoyed this movie and my companions and I had a lot to chew on afterwards. It's certainly not a blockbuster (although there are some well done chase scenes), but well worth the price of admission. P.S. Check out the first scene, which is all one continuous shot.

2/3 a good movie

I liked the first 2 stories in this movie. Both of which could have been good if flushed out to be their own movies. BUT that last act/movie sucked. One could say all 3 acts/movies were cliche'd but the 3rd was the worst. Oh and when you realize how the movie is dragging on you will wish the 3rd act was gone.

Had high hopes. Love the actors. Love the IDEA of this story... but once the first "big thing" happens it got so dang boring. Snoozer for a good 1/2 of the flick.

TPBTP is a haunting display of how the sins of a father are visited upon their sons. This movie is not paced like your typical Hollywood whiz-bang film, it is a thoughtful, sensitive portrayal of real life characters coping inside each of their lives. I highly recommend seeing this as an alternative to a barely 3D old dinosaur movie.

The Place Beyond the Pines

A beautiful, deep and haunting film. The complexities of life, choices, consequences, and the impact of fatherhood resonate deeply. Not fast food film, but a complex meal to digest.
