Real & Haunting

An amazing film with breathtaking scenes. Surprising twists, parallels, and you will leave thinking of it for days. It sticks to your bones. This is not Hollywood, it's Schenectady. Gritty, ugly, and heroless. Not for the frou frous, but so well developed and shot, it's worth the pause.

Flat performances, predictable story line

The movie was only moderately interesting to me. While it had a cast of gifted actors, the director did not seem to get much out of them. Two standouts were Ben Mendelsohn and Emory Cohen in supporting roles as a well-meaning auto repairman and a drug-obsessed high school bully, respectively, although it defied any credulity to think that the twenty three year old Cohen, often sporting a heavy five o'clock shadow, was young enough to still be in high school. The other problem was that the story line did not seem all that interesting. Alienation and dysfunction between fathers and sons? So what? Even this was not really explored in any interesting detail.

Expectation was too high

Nothing special about this movie, the relatively high rating on IMDB is just because the ending was somewhat unpredictable. But the story line is too fragmented. You have to follow different roles and learn their stories and in the end you don't know you are on who's side of the story. Not much to be remembered of.

Thoughtful human melodrama. Believable. See it.

When I saw the trailer, I thought "ok, maybe, looks like one to see." I had the chance to watch "The Place Beyond the Pines" last night; and I'm glad I did! Very interesting story, with believable characters, in believable situations! Actions can have consequences, either good or bad, and it can affect others, now or later. I want to talk about this in more detail - but don't want to spoil anything to those deciding weather to see this film. So, I'll leave it to that. I went to a smaller cinema in a smaller auditorium to see it; and wow, it was filled with people!

Good to see once

It was quite long and although had a good story/premise, was too far fetched for me. Movie also felt like I was watching one movie the first hour and another movie the second hour. Was ok to see once but I wouldn't see it again.
