I really wanted to like this movie... but

I have to rate this a noble failure. All three main actors: Gosling, Cooper, Mendes are typically insanely talented and charismatic. Here, however, they were wrong. I don't know if they weren't right for the parts, or chose to play them blank and "frozen", or simply bad on-screen chemistry. Their story never came alive to me. The young actors in the second half were so unlikeable, that I didn't. Like them, I mean. To summarize, the most sympathetic and interesting character in this film is Mendes character's husband. The guy who stepped in and made a family for Mendes character and baby.

WTH?

Talk about movies that make no sense. There are several twists in the story - the middle part is flat out boring - and at the end logic is thrown out the window and none of the issues or questions get answered. Basically everyone screws up - and they all live happily after. That only happens if your last name is Lohan.

Meandering and uninteresting

Although the actors in the film do a fantastic job, I did not find it very enjoyable to watch. It seemed to drag on quite a while. In fact, when the credits rolled my fellow moviegoer to my left said "Halleluia." I typically enjoy or find something interesting in most movies I see, unfortunately this one I could not. I often asked myself during the film what the point of the movie was. By the end, I was trying to review in my mind what the filmmaker wanted to say or what the message was, but there just didn't seem to be one. Skip it or see it on video if you are curious.

Tooooooo long

I guess this one was originally written to be a mini-series, because it is a multi-generational look at the relationship between fathers and sons. But stuck into a 2 hour + format it is far too long for an average movie and the editing/script really don't do any of the stories justice. The advertising is deceptive. Ray Liotta isn't a co-star - he has maybe 2 or 3 brief scenes. And Ryan Gosling disappears after the first 1/3 of the film, just about the time Bradley Cooper appears. The story takes place over nearly 2 decades, but the people barely age. There is almost nothing worth while in this film.

A tale of fathers and one act of justice that can change everything, leaving up a legacy of sins, and confusions about what's right and wrong anymore.

A tale of fathers and one act of justice that can change everything, leaving up a legacy of sins, and confusions about what's right and wrong anymore. EXCELLENT storytelling (very unexpected, that I can guarantee you). Pacing is a bit off. 20 mins cut off might have made it worth owning in my collection.
