This is a serious movie, not Hollywood formula, and so, perhaps not for everybody. All the actors were very good, including most surprisingly, Eve Mendes. Impressive cinematography given the somewhat grimy side of small town America that is the setting and in a way, a character in the movie. There are big themes at play here, including "sins of the father" and moral ambiguity. Are any of these characters "all bad?"
I really enjoyed this movie and my companions and I had a lot to chew on afterwards. It's certainly not a blockbuster (although there are some well done chase scenes), but well worth the price of admission.
P.S. Check out the first scene, which is all one continuous shot.

I went to this move with great expectations but certainly was NOT rewarded.
Ryan Gosling is no Ed Norton and Bradly Cooper is lame. The real
acting came from Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta who had way to small of a roll and
keep an eye on Dane DeHaan - he is a true up and coming young star.
The move had no redeeming factors unless you believe, most
American men are booze smoking drug addicted psychos who,
either wind up dead or deadbeats - raise kids that do nothing but
booze - smoke and oh yes beat each other up. WOW - I guess that's the
NEW NORMAL we are expected to 'believe!?' That's UNBELIEVABLE!

Nothing special about this movie, the relatively high rating on IMDB is just because the ending was somewhat unpredictable. But the story line is too fragmented. You have to follow different roles and learn their stories and in the end you don't know you are on who's side of the story. Not much to be remembered of.

I liked the first 2 stories in this movie. Both of which could have been good if flushed out to be their own movies. BUT that last act/movie sucked. One could say all 3 acts/movies were cliche'd but the 3rd was the worst. Oh and when you realize how the movie is dragging on you will wish the 3rd act was gone.

TPBTP is a haunting display of how the sins of a father are visited upon their sons.
This movie is not paced like your typical Hollywood whiz-bang film, it is a thoughtful, sensitive portrayal of real life characters coping inside each of their lives.
I highly recommend seeing this as an alternative to a barely 3D old dinosaur movie.
