No spoilers here. I am not going to say anything about the story, except that it was much deeper and more interesting than I expected. The story, in fact, was what moved me most about this film. There was a lot of action and suspense in this film -- I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. But it was far more than "just" an action or suspense film, because the characters were so beautifully drawn. I found myself thinking about the characters the next day -- as though they were people whom I knew in real life, wondering what they were doing now. I care about these characters. I relate to them, although they live extremely different lives than I do -- but that's part of the fascination.
The acting was incredible. Every single character was perfectly cast and did a superb job. Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes exude a smoldering raw sexuality and energy. Gosling's make-up was fascinating. Directing: brilliant. Photography: beautiful.
Take a chance and just go see this film.

RG & BC do a great job in this movie. Gosling's role reminds me exactly of his character in drive. The first half of the movie is great. However the second half, kind of drawn out. They could have easily cut the last hour in half. Other than that, interesting storyline and great actors.

Portrait of America, where the most calculating and ruthless among us always win. However, there are no stock characters--no good guys or bad guys, no apologists for criminals--nor are there kudos for what passes for heroism in our country--the story only shows that beneath the veneer of civilization, the tooth-and-claw struggle for dominance still reigns supreme--perhaps never more than now.
But the movie does not preach, only I am preaching here--the movie is a thrilling epic story so beautifully acted, photographed and directed, with such a fine script, that I wanted to keep watching--I was immersed and in no hurry to re-emerge. Simply wonderful.

This review contains a spoiler. Don't continue reading if you don't want me to ruin it for you.
I thought it was really interesting how *SPOILER ALERT* Luke dies in the first act and they hold on to the audience's interest in the second act with Avery's storyline and how it all ties up with Luke in the end.
What could have helped this film be better is a shorter third act. They go into how Luke and Avery's kids' lives also intertwine in the future and it just becomes too much. I get that the moral of the story is your actions have consequences and those consequences can live on forever. And that we should all try to avoid bad decisions because that can sometimes ruin people's lives. But I personally felt, the story didn't have to go that in depth.
Towards the end, I felt it starting to drag on and they should have left it with Luke and Avery's story with a little wrap up of the kids in the end.
All in all, I think it was a good film with good acting, directing and story.

Such a waste of a film in money and talent.. Did not care for the characters to show you how bad this film is. Terrible Directing, Producing and dialogue. I agree 100% with Chicago Sun TImes review. Please read before u see this. Love the actors but they could not save this film..
