The trailers for this film imply some kind of high-tension cop movie featuring two of Hollywood's favorite leading men. It isn't. It is 180 degrees from a high-tension cop movie If you're a guy, take your date there as the camera is on both these guys for a long time (sequentially, almost never together) and that seems to satisfy the ladies. If you're a gal, please don't take a guy to this movie. He'll be doing everything he can not to check is his email.

An amazing film with breathtaking scenes. Surprising twists, parallels, and you will leave thinking of it for days. It sticks to your bones. This is not Hollywood, it's Schenectady. Gritty, ugly, and heroless. Not for the frou frous, but so well developed and shot, it's worth the pause.

The movie was only moderately interesting to me. While it had a cast of gifted actors, the director did not seem to get much out of them. Two standouts were Ben Mendelsohn and Emory Cohen in supporting roles as a well-meaning auto repairman and a drug-obsessed high school bully, respectively, although it defied any credulity to think that the twenty three year old Cohen, often sporting a heavy five o'clock shadow, was young enough to still be in high school.
The other problem was that the story line did not seem all that interesting. Alienation and dysfunction between fathers and sons? So what? Even this was not really explored in any interesting detail.

It was quite long and although had a good story/premise, was too far fetched for me. Movie also felt like I was watching one movie the first hour and another movie the second hour. Was ok to see once but I wouldn't see it again.

The flaws in this movie are forgivable because the overall entertainment value is so profound. It is a movie for those of us who love watching great themes unfold. The elements for that include a meaningful plot, characters we can care about, and stunning visuals. Wow. The Place Beyond the Pines delivers. The cameral obviously loves Ryan Gosling. He looks incredible from any angle. The opening shot is terrific, and the cycle scenes are breath-taking. He and the "son" bookend this story beautifully. Cooper and the actor playing his "son" were a bit too unsympathetic to me to care what happened to them in the end.
I can understand the negative reviews: it's hard to sit still and watch a story when you accustom yourselves to thinking deafening noise levels are indicative of a movie's worth.
