Slickly made -- in the good sense -- and most entertaining. Read full review

Pirates relies more on classical and pop culture-driven references to deliver its worthwhile message. Read full review

    Boston Globe | Ty Burr

Simple without being simple-minded, warm without worrying too much about being cool. It's agreeably silly fare for the very small set and not so noisy that parents can't either follow along or take a quick nap. Read full review

Clever enough to keep adults entertained, even if the story is something of an antique. Read full review

Won't do anything for adult auds, but this second bigscreen adventure from the popular VeggieTales franchise should easily win over tots with its reliable menu of silly songs, easily digestible morals and wholesome (if not always fresh) produce-based characters. Read full review

It's a boilerplate plot like one you might find in any morning cartoon. Read full review

My 3-year-old date had a fine time, pronouncing the movie "very good" and backing up her assessment by going 90 minutes with barely a fidget. Which may actually be the highest compliment any movie can ask for. Read full review

Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of V8? That's what you get when you cross VeggieTales characters with a pirate yarn. Read full review

Veggie Tales is a faith-based franchise that uses a blend of a religious/moral message and humor to teach about honesty and forgiveness. But Pirates lacks the humor of the videos and "A Veggie Tales Movie." Read full review

Information for Parents
Common Sense Media says OK for kids 4+ Like steamed veggies: Good for you, but bland.
What Parents Need to Know Parents need to know that this animated film -- part of a large, Christian-themed film-and-TV franchise -- has a light touch when it comes to sending its feel-good message (which, this time around, is that anyone can be a hero; all it takes is to do what you know is right). Some situations, as when a pirate captures a young man, sound perilous, but they're not that scary. There's no swearing, violence, or sexual innuendo, but several specific products are mentioned by name -- noticeably more than in other VeggieTales titles.
  • Families can talk about how this movie is similar to and different from other VeggieTales titles.
  • What does the VeggieTales brand mean to you and your family?
  • How is it different from other kids' and family media brands?
  • Families can also discuss George/Pa Grape's lack of confidence. How does he measure himself at first? Does he see things differently in the end? Why?
  • What about Elliot/Larry and his many fears? How does he overcome them?
The good stuff
  • message true3 Positive messages: Three unassuming busboys prove they're heroes when they go back in time and save a prince from a vengeful pirate, who gets his comeuppance. In the end, nearly everyone comes around and learns a good lesson: Do the right thing and be a hero, no matter whether you think you have the makings of one.
  • rolemodels true3 Positive role models: Not an issue
What to watch for
  • violence false0 Violence and scariness: A cartoon pirate who thirsts for fame and power brandishes a sword near a character's head. He also abducts a prince. Some bickering.
  • sex false0 Sexy stuff: Not an issue
  • language false0 Language: No swearing, though the word "loser" is used a few times.
  • consumerism false3 Consumerism: Noticeably more mentions of labels and products than standard VeggieTales fare, including TiVo, The Weather Channel, Edward Scissorhands, Love Boat, etc. There are vast arrays of VeggieTales merchandise available.
  • drugsalcoholtobacco false0 Drinking, drugs and smoking: One character has a strong penchant for "cheese curls" (i.e. cheese puffs).
