    Original buzz:

    Very Good...Very Sad

    by

Not as good as Pan's Labyrinth, but well worth the watch. Don't be expecting a 'scary' movie, even though this is a 'ghost' story. It is, however, a wonderfully woven story of a woman, her family and her experiences back at her childhood home. If this movie doesn't make you cry, then you are either a very callous human being, or a very hardened one.

    Wow. Scary and wicked story.

I went to see del Toro's work after LABYRINTH. This story is interesting and is put together with all the tense moments that make scary films work. Darkness, doubt, fear, and mistrust are work effectively.
The pictures gains momentum at the ends and rolls to an unpredictable end that will move you deeply.
del Toro fans should not pass this one.

    THE ORPHANAGE

This is simply one of the most beautifully made ghost stories to come along in a very long while. The story is fascinating, even touching as a woman buys the house she once lived in as an orphan and plans to use it after rennovation as a care home for disadvantaged youth. When tragedy strikes with her young adopted son, she begins to be haunted by the house's past and she must go deep within herself not only for her own well being but that the children who also lived with her when she was younger.

Produced by new fantasy / horror maven Guillermo Del Torro who brought you PAN'S LABYRYNTH and HELL BOY II as well the older creatur feature MIMIC, doesn't cut any corners and mounts an extraordinarily beautiful movie and his director Juan Antonio Bayons knows how work on an audience's imagination with one deliciously creepy and clever scene after another. One you should really watch with the lights out!
