I can count on one hand the number of special effects used in this movie, and I wish I could count on both. I wish they could have gotten a big company to back them up and give this movie a real budget - both for the special effects and the acting. I think I've seen more money put into a CW show than into this film.
Overall, it was a fun movie to watch, but there is definitely room for improvement in City of Ashes. Go see it and enjoy the beginning of a magical series!

So did they completely ruin the garden scene with an awful song that never should have been recorded for this movie? Yes. Was it a bad call to compromise on major plot themes and re-write the ending of this first installment? Yes.
I hope every last newspaper critic gives this film a bad review and that it STILL makes tons of money in its first weekend. It's time for the people who make these movies to learn that they're beholding to the readers, and to stop making silly cinematic compromises to try to please people who will never be pleased. This genre is important, and it counts on the successes of franchises like this one. The dumb comparisons to other franchises, the thoughtless and near-sighted criticism about young adult source material, will be silenced by numbers if the fans can make their voices heard. And they need to be heard- stories like this are important. They empower, teach courage and tolerance, and bring together people from all over the world.

There are so many GREAT things about THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES. If you are a fan of the series, you'll adore it. Those who aren't familiar will love all the action and character development.
I'm not just gushing over this film because Cassie is my favorite author or that I adore the actors. I absolutely loved the movie. From the start of the film, I was swept away into the world of Clary Fray (Lily Collins), who has been living quietly in Brooklyn for as long as she can remember, when she begins to see some startling things. When her mom, Jocelyn (Lena Headey), disappears after a violent struggle, Clary, with the help of her best friend Simon (Robert Sheehan) search for Jocelyn. This this adventure, Clary begins to uncover dark secrets and even darker threats in the hidden world of the Shadowhunters, angel-human warriors who have protected humanity from evil forces for centuries.

This movie is not receiving the credit it should. The book and the movie mainly follow the same story line. I took my boyfriend to see it and he has never read the books. He understood it and actually enjoyed it. The characters were spot on. The acting was a lot better than what I excepted and the imagination that was in my head spilled out on screen. If you are truly a fan of the books and want to see these characters come alive, I definitely recommend you seeing this film. They will only get better in time.

If you are going to see the book word for word on the screen this is not it; however, this is a great movie. It has a little something for everyone: action packed, love, betrayal, secrets yet to be revealed. I went to see it last night, and will go back to see it again next week!
