What a Tenor!

All of the performers in this version of Massenet's "Werther" were fantastic, but enough praise can't be given to the German tenor Jonas Kaufman's interpretation of the opera's main character. The set took a bit getting used to, but created an appropriate mood for each of the acts. Unfortunately, the sound died during the death scene which completely dissapated the dramatic buildup that the final act was creating. The sound only returned when the closing curtain dropped. I will try to hear Jonas Kaufman in every opera he appears in. He made the experience very worthwhile for both his voice and his excellent acting.

"Werther" HD broadcast from the Met Opera

Jonas Kaufmann was absolutely wonderful, both singing and acting, although I wish he had protested against the ankle-length black coat he wore up until the very last scene! He even wears it in the usually not shown ball scene. Sophie Koch has a lovely voice, but in closeups a bit long in the tooth. Costumes were unimaginative. Act I set was fussy, unnecessary little bridges going nowhere, which remained on stage during brief ball scene (?). Act III, in Albert's house, was really odd. Charlotte is in a nightgown with a sort of caftan over it, reading Werther's letters, which she strews all over the room; no one notices them, or the rest of the letters stuffed into a permanently left-open desk drawer. When were all the meetings, poetry-readings, translations, harpsichord-playing Werther and Charlotte refer to supposed to have occurred? During the first three months of her marriage to Albert? Was he constantly visiting? I would go hear Jonas Kaufmann sing the telephone directory..

Amazingly Powerful Performance

And the acting ability in addition to the singing of Jonas Kaufmann was over the top. When Werther is on the stage there's nobody Elise. Meryl Streep is his only equivalent. The only issue is the sound went out at the climax. That was painful. Elaine Clayman

Jonas and Sophie are both SO AMAZING in this production. Jonas shows a range of emotion that is breath-taking and Sophie is just right. This is an absolute MUST SEE. Diana Ashley

Werther

The opera was superb. Kaufman who sing Werther is on the top of his form. The music is divine. But during the last the most beautiful duet the sound vanished. It was so disappointing. I understand that it was technical glitch. But everybody were upset.
