Werther (Met Opera Live HD)

Excellent except that the sound went off right in the middle of the climactic final scene, so we could all watch poor Werther die, but couldn't hear the music. Sound came back on just as the curtain fell!

Massenet: Werther Metropolitan Opera in HD

This was a beautiful performance. The new production from the Metropolitan Opera lived up to all that was promised. Janos Kaufmann's portrayal of a poet suffering for his art and love for Charlotte certainly was for the ages ,he knows the role and he sang magnificently getting the audience in the movie theater to applaud several times for his solo arias and duets with Sophie Koch. Sophie Koch was excellent as the conflicted Charlotte torn between her love for Werther and her loyalty to her Husband Albert. The conducting was top grade exoressing all the emotion of the opera and creating one melodic line from the first note to the dramatic climax at the end of the opera. An unfortunate computer crash lost some of the sound during the final duet of the lovers but all the drama seen and heard by all. This was a performance that shows why Massenet was so popular in his time.

Being a BIG Jonas Kaufmann fan - it was not hard for me to love this performance. It was fantastic ! I loved the other singers beside Jonas (who was wonderful) especially Sophie Koch. Great afternoon!!!

Depressed, love-obsessed poet did not charm me

Despite splendid performances by the two principals, a reasonably restrained production with an unobtrusive "update" and some wonderful music, the plot of "Werther" is much too dreary for my taste and became, for me, a once-only opera. The emotionally overwrought doings here may have been hot stuff in Goethe's day but seem a bit much for our more sophisticated era. In his entre'act interview, even the magnificent Jonas Kaufmann ("Werther)" made jokes about his poor character's need for Freudian analysis and to "get a life." Destructive obsessions are not often entertaining. My apologies to those, including my wife, who loved it.

The opera was outstanding. The problem occurred at the theater when the sound went off in the final scene of the opera. At the most dramatic moment, we were not able to hear the music. So I hesitate to recommend the Encore if it is the soundtrack from the live production. Warning: the last scene is silent - quite unacceptable for an opera.
