Great cast; poor venue

I enjoyed the music and the principals and chorus a lot; I had mixed feelings about the production - moving the action to the 20th century and the boxy set. But Loews Kips Bay really disappointed me this time. The video was squished horizontally from the beginning; the audio was intermittently interrupted; and the temperature in the theater was alternately too warm and too cold. The manager said they project what they're given (not a satisfactory response) and gave us free passes (not usable online, only at the box office) for any other show - a nice gesture.

Opera At Its Best

The Met's current production of Un Ballo in Maschera is just superb. Everything about it is first-rate--the soloists (Hradonovsky's voice sends chills up one's spine but Alvarez, Kim, Blythe, Radanovsky, and others are also transcendent), the score (perhaps one of Verdi's best), the production, the staging, the chorus, and the orchestra. The HD videography captures it all--in detailed close-ups not available to the live audience. The interviews during intermissions with singers, director, and orchestra director further enhance the experience. Don't miss this one! Screening should be repeated often on HD Encores to demonstrate to a wide viewing audience just how magnificent and emotionally gripping opera can be.

Un Ballo en Maschera

Great performance in all respects, singers, horus, orchestra and conductor. Regal Cinemas in the Falls was not a perfect host. The theatre was an ice box and pleas to change the temperature remained unanswered. Sound from adjacent theatre was too penetrating and disturbed Verdi a great deal.

It takes getting used to modern day costumes. Once you get over that, enjoy the music, gorgeous voices and very clever and interesting staging and sets. Music, some passages, reminiscent of Traviata, well it is Verdi after all.
