I thoroughly enjoyed. Beautiful production. First act was dark but the remaining acts were fabulous. I love the intermissions with the behind-the-scenes views of the Met. So interesting.

Of all Met HD Simulcasts "The Mascarade Ball" by Giuseppe Verdi, WINS The Award for best cinematography, directing, and casting All Star Cast singing and orchestra! So often, and usually these Met HD "movies" are Not an accurate portayal of the infamous staging and actual sound so capable, only when actually attendng the Met. There can never be a substitution for being in the house at The Metropolitan Opera. Think "There is no place like home". But "Un Ballo" truly brings to the movie screen... magical music and a sense of presence. Enjoy!
If you Love Opera or want to learn? You Must GO SEE this HD Production ... you will not be disappointed!

The opera exceeded my expectations....having read some negative reviews.
I did not mind the time frame switch or the uncolorful sets, especially since I had not seen it before. A reviewer dwelled on that and made an off-hand remark about how great the singing was. But set design is not as relevant as the singers. I enjoyed all the voices. Some of the dramatic acting was outstanding......not something easily seen in a "life size" performance.
If only stage plays were available in HD transmission.

This was the most disappointing Met HD telecast. WHAT was Gelb thinking?
The singing was excellent, but the production didn't work and was so silly in so many ways.
I felt sorry for the singers having to endure the Alden "concept"!
The Icarus motiv didn't work and Oscar prancing around with wings in the prologue (which was superfluous and unnecessary!) was ridiculous!
The "secretaries" "choreography" in the scene with the Judge was silly and distracting!
The production was very non-specific, even though they did the Swedish version. Gustavo came off as a fool in many scenes. Certainly not regal at all.
The chorus pulling out opera glasses to watch the Amelia, Ankarstrom confrontation was also silly!
The "portrait" of Gustavo on the wall during "Eri tu" looked like a bad black and white, "head shot"!
Not exactly "Euro-trash" but pretty close. I had to turn away from the scrren many times and say, mentally, OH PLEASE!

This was one of the more stupid productions I have seen in 38 years as a music criticv. , of an opera I know from memory. Well-sung and conducted but stupidly directed.
