Good, not great Tosca

This was a reallly good production of this opera and a must see for anyone interested in one of operas most important pieces. The singing was excellent, though I don't know that I liked Mattila as Tosca as much as I've liked her in other roles. Avarez is a great Cvaradosi, and Gagnidze is one of the best Scarpias I've ever seen. The only problem with the performance was that iwas a half hour late starting. All is all, a terrific evening of opera.

Pucini's music is a joy, however, physically, Kavita Mattila is entirely wrong for the part of Tosca. Her face shows the loose jowls of middle age puffiness. Even Marcelo Alvarez, whose voice is fantastic, does not present the appearance of a lover one would swoon over. I'm very happy that the Germantown Stadium 14 theatre offers these operatic HD screenings, but after this long, someone on the staff should have acquired the training required to raise the lights at the beginning of an intermiision, and dim them again when the film resumes.
