This opera was a real surprise! Not the music, of course, it is Puccini after all, but the score supported the singers and did not feature the orchestra all. Not a bad thing, just an observation. But the principals were outstanding, even our least favorite soprano, Karita Mattila. This is the best role we have seen her in so far, and have absolutely hated her in all the others. Marcelo Alvarez was quite good (and adorable) but the really perfect casting was George Gagnidze, a Russian who spoke almost no English but was flat out creepy as Scarpia. We were a little surprised at a totally naked ******, but today it seems anything goes.

The Film was listed to begin at 6:30 but began at 7pm. The beginning sound was so loud I had to cover my ears. The volumne was lowered somewhat by the end of the first Act. Then during the third Act the screen went black but the singing went on for a long time before someone was notified that there was a problem. I don't expect that sort of performance from such a great theatre. The music was superb, the singers superb, the sound quality had a potential had the projectionist been on her (his) toes. We are thrilled with the availability of attending these Simulcasts and hope more people take advantage of this. BPAV
