The Tempest

HD Met Opera was the best venue for Ades' Tempest. There were interviews with librettist, composer/director and LaPage and Peter Gelb, Audrey Luna, and the marvelous Prospero. The music was fascinating, frequent key changes, great vocal demands, wonderful scenery. And Ariel was very controversail --singing st a too high range, doing gymnastics, and a glitzy costume--quite a contrast to Ariel in "The Enchanted Island" last January.

A stunning production, unexpected musical values that truly drive the story. And what a cast! Best of all, shows with finality that opera in English can reach the heights of the best in the genre. Just a wonderful experience.

The music gave me a headache. The composition was mostly discordant and the high soprano part of Ariel sounded more like shrieking than melodic. The costumes were lovely as was the set, but I don't want lo listen to the music again.
