Nose

This is not a typical movie, and as such, there are different criteria. Even though it's an opera, I would call it a great spectacle at best with weird music, and skillful singing. Very talented execution with deep understanding of Russia and Russian culture, great visual effects. Must see for the connoisseur opera lover.

I think this performance belongs on some Broadway theatre, not at the MET. I am very used to attending operas in non-English with English sub-titles, but this one needs to be sung in English to make any sense. I spent most of my time having to look down at the very speedy sub-titles, without being able to follow the acting. I like Shostakovich instrumental works, but not his vocal - it was mostly shouting. and too loud. .

The Nose is Not So Much

As a short story, The Nose is tops. It has humor with a twist, because, in a way, it is all of us, competing with the part of ourselves that wants to be the best possible version of us without the warts. But is is, after all, a story based on an absurdity. As an opera, especially for an audience that does not speak or understand Russian, the humor, the emotional content, the nuances are lost in repetitious music and lyrics that follow the short story, but resonate quite differently when sung. As a production, the show has much to be proud of. The artistic concept, the scenery, the costumes, and the staging have an engaging allure, lots of color, and bounce. The voices are good, the acting appropriate given the limited emotional range of the show. As a "movie" Life from the Met, the close ups of the lead, whose nose is very obviously in its normal place, subtract from the story's twist.

While the intent to be creative by the Met was admirable, and the production was well executed and acted, the content was not as funny as had been reported. It just overdid the subject again and again, became extremely loud, and we left after two hours with the walls shaking.

A complete waste of time. Horrid music. Stupid story. Not even mildly entertaining. I have seem over 200 operas and this is by far the worst without question.
