Fabulous performance!

This production is so wonderful, even if you're not in love with Shostakovich, you will be after you see this opera! The production design and direction are brilliant (think Eisenstein's films, Cocteau, Artaud, Three Penny Opera). The singers are engaging, funny, true to the spirit of Gogol's story. The audience was laughing, it was the most enjoyable send-up of bureaucracy and human dumbness imaginable.

I was rather disappointed in this simulcast. I felt like I was watching a Chaplinesque comedy of the man chasing his nose. The singing was superb, but the content and the music were not my cup of tea.

The singers were very good in their roles, cinematography was good. The story was absurd. I did laugh and also scratch my head at some of it. Just not my kind of opera. I was curious and am glad I saw it but would not care to see it again. I do very much like Opera Live at the Met in HD and will attend the entire season.

I like Shostakovich's music; the staging of the opera was superb as were the singers. My wife didn't care for it, viz. no melodies. It is Theatre of the Absurd. So be it. My friends who were with us were not impressed.
