A complete waste of time. Horrid music. Stupid story. Not even mildly entertaining. I have seem over 200 operas and this is by far the worst without question.

While the intent to be creative by the Met was admirable, and the production was well executed and acted, the content was not as funny as had been reported. It just overdid the subject again and again, became extremely loud, and we left after two hours with the walls shaking.

It was theater in the absurd, and as such I "got" it. I found the character searching for his nose while sporting a healthy, Roman nose disconcerting. The shadow nose was clever and its foray into 'doing its own thing' delightful.

We saw Paolo Szot in South Pacific. How he can go from such glorious tunes like Some Enchanted Evening and This Nearly was Mine to the atonal, amelodic music in the Nose, has us scratching our heads. The story was interesting and had some comment about the power of the press and the shallowness of society, but the music was not pleasant.

commendable for its effort, the Met's production a la Henderson (?) left us confused even outside its attempted satire of Russian society. We were not wearned that the composer's music would be sung without recognizable melodyand at fortissimo volume relentlessly.
