Metropolitan Opera's Opening Night Gala - September 22nd, 2008

There are chills still running down my spine from last evening's Opening Night at the Met with Renee Fleming, being the first soprano ever, to be so honored by this august musical company, on the occasion of its 125th Anniversary. Music and opera lovers in attendance from NYC's Times Square to across two continents were given a radiant gift in Ms. Fleming's stunning voice and beauteous appearance for a moment in opera history which many present will hold in fond memory for years to come. Bravo to Ms. Fleming ...and Many, many thanks!

Wonderful singing beyond belief -- too much talking outside the opera, boring too tears.

Most people know that you need to arrive at 5:00 for a scheduled 6:00 opera to get in line for a decent seat. That's o.k. if they start at 6:00. BUT this one started with a long, long pre show interview - mostly not interesting. The opera started and the Verdi singing was fantastic. The "first act ended" and then more back stage interviews. However when that ended an "intermission clock" started showing 15 MORE minutes before the second act. It was then 8:00. Three hours at the opera is closer to Wagner than Verdi. That is when I left. But what I did see was the finest singing heard ANYWHERE. I hope they don't repeat all this pre-opera stuff for the regular matinees. I dont remember that from last year -- and last years intermission interviews were wonderful.

This was my first time experiencing a MET performance in the theater. I highly enjoyed seeing it in HD. The opening night GALA was superb!. Actually, the up close and personal view of interviews, costumes, and set changes greatly enhanced the event. Of course, all the voices were beautiful. However, Renee Fleming and Thomas Hampson are long favorities of mine. I am a season ticket holder to OCP productions at the Academy of Music and will now add MET performances in the theater as another way to enjoy the music I love so much. An Opera Lover
