This was my first hearing, so getting a fix on the music was difficult but it seemed typical Donizetti in the first act--that's meant to encourage attendance. The second act was less about music than voice, but that merely demonstrates Donizetti's genius. Queen Eliabeth had a great voice but apparently was directed to be very masculine in movement. Maria (DiDonato) had a great voice flawed by vibrato on any high note. The second act belonged to her, and she provided a very rare emotional impact. The men were all very good. In the second and final act, DiDonato dominated over the music, but she was superb. A little English history helps. Washington Concert Opera will perform this opera this spring. Certainly, we will go.

The Met's production of Donizetti's "Maria Stuarda" is fabulous! The sets and costumes are beautiful, and the VOICES, including the chorus, are gorgeous! Joyce DiDonato's voice is incredible!
