Elza van den Heever is the essence of Henry VIII's daughter and Joyce DiDonato's singing is the answer to "why opera?"

Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda,” recounts the clash between Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart (Mary, Queen of Scots) and ends with Mary heading to the executioner’s block. Everything is beautifully done and orchestrated! The entire cast is so talented, the costumes amazing, and the sets so artistic and symbolic. The camera work for the live HD is likewise awesome with very artful compositions of the scenes. The production stars the great American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in the title role. A very dramatic presentation and I must say I was most impressed by the stage design and costumes this time. Colorful, impressive and well-proportioned for the whole stage (unlike some of the previous shows).

I went for Joyce DiDonato whom I was blown away by in her role as Sycorax in The Enchanted Island...much to my delight, Matthew Polenzani whom I saw perform with Ana Netrebko in L'Elisir d'Amore also performs. He is fantastic and very easy on the eyes I must say! Back to Joyce whom in my opinion, is brilliant...she does not disappoint as Mary, Queen of Scots nor does the South African, Elza van den Heever who makes her Met debut as Elizabeth I. The sets and costume designs are absolutely gorgeous!
