    Stunning

I went for Joyce DiDonato whom I was blown away by in her role as Sycorax in The Enchanted Island...much to my delight, Matthew Polenzani whom I saw perform with Ana Netrebko in L'Elisir d'Amore also performs. He is fantastic and very easy on the eyes I must say! Back to Joyce whom in my opinion, is brilliant...she does not disappoint as Mary, Queen of Scots nor does the South African, Elza van den Heever who makes her Met debut as Elizabeth I. The sets and costume designs are absolutely gorgeous!

Maria Stuarda, by its art, creates a new reality

The Metropolitan Opera's magnificent portrayal of Maria Stuarda not only awakens our curiosity, and the scholarly intrigue, about the Elizabethan era of the late 16th century. It also, by the superb performance of Joyce DiDonato in the role of Mary Stuart, creates a new reality in our perspective on that crucial time. In the final scene, Mary actually forgives the Queen for sentencing her to death, beseeching the Almighty not to let Elizabeth's terrible deed interfere with the success of the Queen, and thus the forward movement of the Empire. Now that's quite an act, for which Mary exceeds even her most revered predecessors among Christian martyrs. What Mary does goes beyond conventional heroism to stake out a new territory in dramatic, operatic art. Unbelievable!

The portrayal of Queen Elizabeth is also unique, although somewhat mystifying. Elizabeth -- the originator of the Elizabethan Compromise -- is cast by Donizetti as evil. That's something to ponder, in our own time.

    Maria Stuarda Opera

    by delvec

this opera Maria Stuarda is wonderful. Joyce Di Donato was artistically up to the role. Her acting and singing was sublime. The rest of the cast were great. Must see opera and performance.

    Maria Stuarda was wonderful

My first experience at HD and seeing the Met. It was truly amazing. I could never see everything as closely as with HD. The acoustics in the Regency Theatre in Jacksonville is terrific.
It was very emotional and must admit to tears nearing the end.
Can't wait for Feb 16th so I can see Rigoletto. Thanks to all that have made this available.

    Maria Stuarda

This LIVE in HD performance broadcast from New York City was BEAUTIFULLY done. The principal characters--especially the two females--were exquisite!!! I loved the set design and costuming choices and IF YOU'VE NEVER ATTENDED a LIVE in HD broadcast or Encore! performance--DO IT!!! Part of the beauty of the experience are the interviews that occur/are shown during Intermission. It helps so much to understand and appreciate the FULL depth and breadth of the production and performance decisions.

This is a lovely opera, and this performance of it is Top Notch!!! SEE IT!!! (I think I'm going to attend the Encore! because the original was so great!!!)

    Great experience

Seeing Maria Stuarda in HD was an experience which moved me as well as entertained and educated me. I did read about the story before I got to the theater, so I was somewhat prepared for the sequence of events. However, the honesty of the singing and acting propelled the drama into an interactive mode.

This is a great way to experience opera and be so involved in the piece. The close-ups of the singers, the gorgeous costumes, the interviews with the performers and the local accessibility made this a great experience for me! I have seen many operas live, and I will continue to do so. However, I love the HD broadcasts where I can have the best seat in the house for a fraction of the cost and at my local theater!

Once Again the Riverview Theater in Philadelphia Disappoints its Audience

Since the beginning of the Metropolitan Opera simulcasts, the Riverview Theater on Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia has disappointed its audience by presenting LOUSY sound. The sound is never loud enough. The volume is often so low that one can scarcely hear the audio. This is not the way to see and hear an opera. Friends have consistently and continously complained to management, during the performance, at intermissions, and after the end of the performance. Nothing ever changes. No accommodation is made. At every simulcast the volume is too low.

I don't care about the Rivervies Theater and its business, but I do care about the Metropolitan Opera and its simulcasts. If the Riverview Theater management does not accommodate its audiences' wishes, they will soon find that their audience will go elsewhere.

If anyone has any ideas about how to solve this problem, I hope they will take action.

My rating "OH NO" reflects the sound quality, not the performance.

    Maria Stuarda

It was an unexpectedly overwhelming experience. The voices, the acting the sets, and even the fictionlized history of Mary Stuart and Elizabeth Tudor were incredibly moving.Joyce di Donato is already a national treasure. I'm enjoying the simulcasts more than the live performnces.

    Brava!

    Maria Stuarda

This was a fantastic production. Everything about the work was stunning, singing, acting, sets, etc.. The work was mesmerizing and there was never a let up in the intensity of the production. Joyce DeDonato was incredible as Maria Stuarda. What an incredible voice both as a coloratura and as a bel canto singer. The debut of the soprano playing Elizabeth was also great.

    Fantastic afternoon!

    by

This was one of the best things I've seen at the movies! I loved the opera itself, which was very intense and beautifully sad, and also the backstage interviews and performances of portions of upcoming new productions. I was totally wrecked when the opera ended. LOVED IT!!

    Bravo

What a spectacular performance. The staging, the voices, the sets the costumes none of it could have been better. Also sitting in a comfortable seat and being up close it was a most enjoyable afternoon. One could ask for nothing more., For anyone whop has not taken advantage of seeing a live performance from the Met I urge you to seek out a theater close to home for a most rewarding experience.

    Extraordinary performance!

For someone who knows and loves opera but has never had the opportunity to go backstage and see how the work is put together, going to see a production such as Maria Stuarda is a real treat and an eye-opener. Not only is the HD production incredibly well focused, but the most minute details of the singers and their actions are shown in a way that no one, even sitting on the first row of the theater or even being part of the set of actors, are able to see. In the live production of Maria Stuarda, beyond the impeccable singing of the two queens, their acting was shown in a manner that only someone watching the production as I did, was capable of digesting and enjoying. Superb is the only word I can use to review the opera.

    Maria Stuarda

The experience was fabulous. The production was outstanding. I am not a fan of the Donizetti style to portray the dark story of these two queens. I enjoyed the live feed and backstage view. It was worth every penny.
