I have seen many operas, but this was, by far, the best I have ever seen. I loved it! Natalie Desay was perfect in the role of Violettta,, as were the two other stars in their roles. The main cast is small ,but hold the entire opera. Their voices were at the r best. there was no need for
costuming or sets. Their voices were all they needed.

The Opera, live in HD from the Met in New York presented GLORIOUS singing and wonderful acting. We have seen this opera before but this was a much different production. Though I like this one I must say I prefer the old one. Natalie Dessay was lovely and her singing was above reproach in all ways. But what was not good at all was that we had to stand in line outside for over a half hour just waiting for the theater to open. (We had our tickets as did everyone in line) Then we had to wait again inside waiting for them to ready the theater where the opera would be showing. We could see NO reason for this and feel the theater should not have done this at all. It was a very large group of people waiting fortunately in an orderly fashion but quite disgruntled as well they should have been..Many of those waiting were elderly with walkers and canes. We will not go to this theater again. There are plenty of other theaters from which to choose.

When I saw the set, I thought "On No - not another minimalist update..." The setting and the updates actually enhanced the presentation - more emotion, less schmaltz. Excellent!!!!!!

I don't like the Metropolitan Opera's stark staging in this production. Also, the sound was not properly balanced in our theater during the first act (this improved later on).
During the intermission Natalie Dessai admitted that she missed some of the high notes and Polenzani said that he preferred other roles to that of Alfredo. A strange thing to tell an audience in the middle of a show, even if it's true.
But the singing got stronger and the acting was captivating. Hvorostovski was wonderful. And the Met still outshines most other American opera companies.

More people should be informed of the Live in HD persormances of the Met. This one was, as usual, outstanding, both musically and visually. These opera casts offer an exciting opportunity for superb entertainment for West Texas.
