Great dramatic interpretation complete with great dramatic actors/musicians...... and dance company. Opera today is highly entertaining. You will not be disappointed with this production.

February 26, 2011 - The Met: Live in HD - Gluck's "Iphigenie en Tauride"

Attention opera fans: I heartily recommend The Met: Live in HD, and intend to attend next season ("Manon", perhaps spring 2012). The tech treatment and acting are terrific, and the backstage interviews are worth admission on their own. Thinking about attending? GO!

Gluck and Domingo

The performance of Iphigenie en Tauride left viewers wondering about the excellent singing of all the principals except Placido Domingo. Having heard him first on stage in Don Rodrigo in the City Opera Production of 1965, I have enjoyed his performances for decades. Today he is at the end of a great career, an tired old worn man with a broken vocal technique, making a ruin of Gluck, among the radiant opera composer's of history. The others in the cast were good to excellent in voice and action, the production suitable in style and attentive to singing actors, and the conducting compelling. There is no reason for Placido Domingo to sing on stage any longer. He should leave us to our memories and his recordings. Gluck deserves the best of everything.

I liked the opera very much however the lighting was not very good. The scenes were very dark. I think this is a common problem with the HD transmissions at many theatres. What is being done to correct this problem

Like all the Met Opera HD performances, this one was tremendous. The music and the singing were sublime. The opera is static, though, not too much action on the stage-- but these operas continue to be a wonderful idea.
