Explosion of talent

Every aspect of the Metropolitan Opera's production of Doctor Atomic exploded with talent. The set was incredibly creative; the music was superb, and the singing was excellent. The storyline was timeless, as we could possibly face extinction even today. The audience in our theater loved it!

Great way to make the Met your local opera company

The Metropolitan Opera has really thought through this effort to bring opera to the many people that don't live in New York City and might not have an opera company in their town. The camera work is amazing, allowing for more views and close-ups than on-site audience members of the receive. Interviews with the composer and the star are interesting. "Dr. Atomic" itself has a near perfect first act, with Oppenheimer's obsession and the military, political, and moral tensions surrounding the building of the bomb well-delineated and moving portrayed. The second act, for me, needed another pass through the revision stage. In particular, the purpose of the wife's aria seemed too ambiguous to serve the plot, the theme, or anything else around it. This aria aimlessness is not insignificant since it's quite long, and ends up distracting from what had been a tightly focused work. The opera regains it's footing in the last 5 minutes, as everyone awaits the results of the bomb's test
