This was one of the most moving, extraordinary experiences I have ever had. I was absolutely rivited for 3 1/2 hours; the John Adams music, the Donne and Baudelaire poetry and the stars of the Metropolitan Opera made this a most memorable occasion.

I am a long time opera goer and lover, however iI have never been a fan of contemporary opera. I have seen many as the Chicago Lyric Opera tried to introduce them to their audiences. I saw nothing in Doctor Atomic to change my mind on the subject. The story was compelling, the actors were first rate as were the voices. For me opera is mostly about the music and the arias and Doctor Atomic failed on both counts. I guess i am a traditionalist when it comes to opera and there are still so many beautiful works which iI enjoy over and over again as well as others which do not get enough attention like La Rondine and The Pearl Fishers, to name just two. So, I am giving up on contemporary opera. Long live Verdi, Puccini, et al.

Dr. Atomic

Fascinating film, I felt it strongly conveyed the tense atmosphere prior to the bomb testing. My favorite part was when the scientists were singing their doubts and fears about whether the test would be successful and whether they were doing the right thng. The Robert Oppenheimer portrayal was beautifully acted and sung by Finley. The closeups of his face were amazing, as his emotions were vividley expressed by subtle changes in his expression and his voice is monderful. I thought the opera/film carried a strong anti-bomb message, and revealed things to me that I had never known. (I was 16 when Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed I didn't know that it was raining during the test, and that there were all sorts of blunders, and that the Military were overriding the scientists on crucial decisions. As an opera, I felt I might have enjoyed it more in the opera house, The many closeups, although psychologically revealing somehow took away from the operatic experience,

Every aspect of the Metropolitan Opera's production of Doctor Atomic exploded with talent. The set was incredibly creative; the music was superb, and the singing was excellent. The storyline was timeless, as we could possibly face extinction even today. The audience in our theater loved it!
