Worth seeing for a few great scenes -- especially the final aria of the first act . Some great music, but a libretto that needs to be restructured to focus better on Robert Oppenheimer's agony, and less on the absolutely tension-less build-up to the inevitable first atomic explosion at the end of the opera. Absolutely no suspense in the second act, and a general let down after the first.

If you are interested in contemporary opera this is accessible and satisfying.

I was a bit disappointed with the first act. It was too linear, just prose lines sung. But the second act was great. I loved the John Adams music

Blast from the Past

Another Met in HD performance--and a real treat for an opera lover who doesn't have the bucks to go to NYC often. Hypnotic, dark, terrifying--the banal and the eternal merge in music and libretto. Sellars used poems Oppenheimer loved with tremendous effect. The costuming and sets stunning and 1950's oppressive, somehow at the same time. FAT Boy hung over the set like the sword of Damocles from the second act on. Not opera you can whistle, but powerful and memorable music in the John Adams style.
