see it only for the acting

Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman are brilliant, but that is the only reason to see it. The director jumps from one scene to another, scenes are not connected, and the story is ridiculous. I guess you have to really LOVE this director in order to like this so-called ART movie. My husband and myself, and the people in front of us were all looking at our watches. It was close to torture after about the first hour.

Save your popcorn for another movie

This is one of those movies that the critics love, the fans hate and it will win an Academy award. You can go now and suffer through it or watch it on DVD and fast forward through it next year although I am not sure it's worth that. Long, depressing, is there a plot? Acting is good and set design is great but I wonder if the actors could have wasted their time on a movie that had a plot and a story worth watching. Yuck!

Cerebral and Surreal but not Entertaining

Saw The Master last night as two of my favorite actors are the stars. Read Dustin's review at Pajiba, which made me really psyched. But, bottom line, I didn't enjoy it. I didn't think the acting was particularly inspired. I will always be jaded by the actors' respective performances in The Gladiator and Capote. I didn't feel that their roles in The Master as mentally-ill alcholic and cult leader came up to that level. Also, the story line did not seem to have either a beginning or an end. I felt as if I had been a spectator to a segment of two peoples' lives where nothing really got resolved. (Also, GF was looking at her watch after 45 minutes and that is NEVER a good thing!)

Master - Bator

This movie is pretentious piece of claptrap. The audience that I sat in at the Angelica Film center was actually tittering and groaning at some of the atrocious dialog. I had no idea what the movie was really about. If the Angelica theater really cared about cinema they would create an environment that one could actually enjoy a movie in. The projection was sub-standard, the sound was muddled and difficult to hear. My god I should have ripped the cost of the ticket up and gone out for coffe in the Village

The Master

While this is not a mainstream movie for everyone, it was intriguing and fascinating. Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix are assured of best actor nominations. This was a master-class in acting, for sure. The story concept was interesting, but the characters so unusual, it was hard to tell what they would do. If you want to see the best American actors around, go see this movie. And, go to dinner with friends afterwards. It will stimulate lively discussion.
