    Walked out

SOOOO very slow & waited for the plot. My friend & I walked out after 30 minutes. I don't ever remember walking out of a movie before. I have no idea what the director was even thinking.

    horrible!

    by

Originally went with high expectations - I mean the critics loved it - right???? As a fan of Joaquin Phoenix and sometimes of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's I thought I couldn't lose. Well I lost 3 hour of my life and my faith that Joaquin picks good scripts. This is just one big depressing blob of a movie. Don't waste your time or money. If curious wait until its released on Netflix.

    WTH

You cannot deny the performances in this movie are great, but the way the story is told leaves me stupified. I think a higher road could have been taken to tell a very intriguing story. The cinematography was also superb but not neccessarily for that subject matter. I left the theatre saying WTH was that to myself.

CONFUSING - right from the beginning

Confusing, muddled, and strange. I'm not sure we were watching a movie about the start of a Scientology like cult, the power hungry cult leader who can capture his followers with some sly logic mixed with his chrisma or the metally deranged mind of a young man who desparately wants to belong.
The audience all let out a collective groan at the end when the lights came up and the credits began to roll. Not because they wanted it to continue, but because they were thrilled it was over. Some audience member were blaming there partner for recommending the film and other were heard suggesting that "you owe me" after enduring this one.
Yes the actors are good, but the story leads nowhere, the characters don't change or evolve and the ability to know when it's a dream, delusion, or reality escaped me.

    Huh?

This had to be the most vapid, self important, "intellectual" waste of time I have ever watched. I finally understand why the Hollywood elites are so in love with Obama.

    Excellent-almost excellent-excellent again

    by

I almost chose "must go!" rating for this film. It's an outstanding work and the two principal actors, Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman gave Oscar performances. However, this isn't an uplifting movie, so don't expect to leave the theater giggling. It's complex and thought-provoking, although not entirely believable, but film has the freedom to be transcendent. I like this as much as I can without loving it.

    The Master

Before the movie I read that it was a story about a WW II veteran who struggles to find himself after the war. The movie started out with masturbation and nudity. My wife and I looked at each other... we decided to see if the movie would get better. The acting is fantastic, but when the second masturbation and big nude scene with about a dozen naked women came on, we decided to leave. So, we did not see how it ended. We are not prudes, but this movie could have been told without the weird sex-oriented scenes portrayed so graphically. It is rated "R" and we have seen other "R" rated movies where brief nudity, or murder, or other violence is not so "in your face". I would not take kids to this movie!

    The Master

Im a huge fan of both stars of this movie Hoffman and Phoenix. However I have to put it into the category of the worst film either one has made. Depressing, tedious. Just poor entertainment. Th ePeter Travers of Rolling stone review suckered me to see it. Half the 10 people in the theater at 59th and third in Manhattan walked out. I saw Philip Seymour Hoffman in TheLast Quartet at Hamptons film fest, that film is actually a gem. The master is real bad.

    Critics are smoking something

    by Donzer

This movie confirms my belief that if the critics love it I should eat my popcorn at home. And, if the critics hate a movie, I know I will enjoy seeing it

    The Master

One of the most tedious, rambling films I've ever seen. I had high expectations because of the cast, but wound up extremely disappointed and bored.

    unfortunate

can I have my 3 hours back?
while I was delighted to see Phoenix back - and he was incredible- this movie had no plot, purpose, or conclusion. we left saying " what did we just see and was there even a point to it at all?"
I kept waiting and waiting thinking surely it would come around to some worthwhile resolution and... it never did.
this isn't even a rental. skip it entirely.

    Boring.

Sure the acting performances were great. Oscars are deserved. You will still leave not caring about any of the characters. Boring critic crack that will leave the public wondering what happened.
