Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman are brilliant, but that is the only reason to see it. The director jumps from one scene to another, scenes are not connected, and the story is ridiculous. I guess you have to really LOVE this director in order to like this so-called ART movie. My husband and myself, and the people in front of us were all looking at our watches. It was close to torture after about the first hour.

This movie started out bleakly and got worse. After enduring almost 1 hour, we walked out. When we looked behind us, there were only 3 people who were staying.
Don't waste your time.

Maybe because there was a problem with the beginning of the movie. We lost a few minutes of it so when it picked up again it was hard to figure out how he got to the hospital. I know that it was supposed to be based on a real story but, I don't remember it. I feel that it was a bit confusing with the jumping back and forth. While the acting was good the story wasn't. I wouldn't tell anyone to go and see it.

While this is not a mainstream movie for everyone, it was intriguing and fascinating. Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix are assured of best actor nominations. This was a master-class in acting, for sure.
The story concept was interesting, but the characters so unusual, it was hard to tell what they would do. If you want to see the best American actors around, go see this movie. And, go to dinner with friends afterwards. It will stimulate lively discussion.

I was so bored and when it ended I had no idea what I watched as was the consensus of people around me in the theater. Phoenix trying to play a 20-something was a joke the scenes with him and the his girlfriend were creepy, like watching a child moletser in action, the obvious age difference was very disturbing. The only good part of the movie was when it finally ended. The characers were unlikeable and forgetable. Save your money.
