This movie started out bleakly and got worse. After enduring almost 1 hour, we walked out. When we looked behind us, there were only 3 people who were staying.
Don't waste your time.

I was pumped to see a movie that focused on the subject of bogus cultmongers like l. ron. This particular effort fell so far short of satisfying my interest. boring, overly long, wordy and pointless. no there there. I'm surprised we made it through the entire dreary pointless couple of hours.

While this is not a mainstream movie for everyone, it was intriguing and fascinating. Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix are assured of best actor nominations. This was a master-class in acting, for sure.
The story concept was interesting, but the characters so unusual, it was hard to tell what they would do. If you want to see the best American actors around, go see this movie. And, go to dinner with friends afterwards. It will stimulate lively discussion.

Maybe because there was a problem with the beginning of the movie. We lost a few minutes of it so when it picked up again it was hard to figure out how he got to the hospital. I know that it was supposed to be based on a real story but, I don't remember it. I feel that it was a bit confusing with the jumping back and forth. While the acting was good the story wasn't. I wouldn't tell anyone to go and see it.

With a cast like Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour-Hoffman and Amy Adams, it seems like there's no way the film could go wrong. But there's huge portions in the middle that seem to drag (we were outright bored) and at the end you're left with a "what the hell just happened" feeling. At least it made for a lot of great conversation after the movie just to try and figure it out.
Having said that, Joaquin Phoenix's acting was fantastic, he simply transformed himself into a whole other person. Wouldn't be surprised if he's in the running for Best Actor this year!
