The Last Exorcism Part II is an effectively unnerving, slow-burn supernatural horror tale. The film is smartly different enough from the original to survive on its own, though it lacks some of the first film's sense of surprise. Read full review

Unfortunately, no one involved seems to have bent over backwards to make the movie either original or even all that scary. Read full review

At the end of the day, it’s a sure-handed sequel, but not a terribly thrilling one. Read full review

Once the “what is real, what is fantasy” questions are answered, and exorcism part deux commences, The Last Exorcism Part II abandons its half-intelligent, tender exploration of Nell’s vulnerability and desirability Read full review

Unfortunately, while director/co-writer Ed Gass-Donnelly displays an admirable restraint in his general eschewing of gratuitous gore, quick editing and flashy visuals, the results have a generally soporific feel. Read full review

It’s the kind of garbage that does a disservice to the fearless possibilities of the horror genre and its knack for sly social commentary. Read full review

Part II is every bit as cheap and far more generic, nothing more than a run of the mill ghost story masquerading as The Devil Made Her Do It. Read full review

Scenes of solemn importance drag on to the point of self-parody in an attempt at establishing mood, while dialogue reeks of connect-the-dots spoonfeeding. Read full review

Information for Parents
Common Sense Media says Iffy for 13+ So-so horror sequel has more spooky scares than gore.
What Parents Need to Know Parents need to know that The Last Exorcism Part II is the sequel to The Last Exorcism (apparently it wasn't the last one after all), though it doesn't follow in the original's "found footage" footsteps. It's also less gory than the first movie, focusing mainly on spooky stuff -- such as things jumping out from the shadows and sudden shocks -- more than blood, though there are a few shocking moments. Language is fairly light but does include one use of "f--k" and a few uses of "s--t." There's some sensuality, such as flirting, kissing, and sensual moaning, as well as some innuendo.
  • Families can talk about The Last Exorcism Part II's violence. What is shown and what isn't? Which is more effective?
  • How scary is this horror movie compared to others you may have seen? How about compared to the original The Last Exorcism?
  • Is Nell a role model? One character tells her that she's responsible for her who she is, and all the bad stuff that happened to her doesn't define her. What does this mean? Is it true?
The good stuff
  • message true0 Positive messages: There are a few messages about how people can make their own decisions about who they are, but the story eventually nullifies these ideas.
  • rolemodels true0 Positive role models: The main character is recovering from a traumatic incident and exhibits certain kinds of bravery, but, at the same time, she still seems to be a victim. Each time she reaches out for help, circumstances demonstrate that she can't really trust anyone.
What to watch for
  • violence false3 Violence: The movie has the expected kinds of spooky stuff -- mostly things jumping out from the shadows, sudden noises, and characters screaming. Violence and blood is more suggested than shown. Some scary flashbacks are shown, with very brief flashes of gore.
  • sex false3 Sexy stuff: The main character definitely thinks about having sex. She also flirts with and kisses a boy at her work. In one scene, someone or something gives her sexual pleasure while she sleeps. She moans, and an unseen force unties some of the laces on her nightgown, though no nudity is shown. She also hears a couple having sex through the walls in a hotel room she's cleaning; she clearly enjoys listening in, moving closer to the wall.
  • language false3 Language: One use of "f--k" and a few of uses of "s--t." Also "hell," "a--hole" is seen written on paper, and characters say "Jesus" and "oh my God" as exclamations.
  • consumerism false0 Consumerism: Not an issue
  • drugsalcoholtobacco false0 Drinking, drugs and smoking: Not an issue
