THE LAST EMPEROR ~ the Last Truly Magnificent Epic!

Having just viewed Bernardo Bertolucci's re-issued, remastered edition of his Oscar-winning as well as worthy 1987 film THE LAST EMPEROR again, I was reminded how staggeringly awe-inspiring truly great film-making can be under the right circumstances! Mind you in the late 8os we were still nearly a decade away from rampant use of CGI. What Bertolucci and his producers had was an amazing story that covered four decades to convey in three hours. And what an astounding triumph it was and remains to be when we are taken into the Forbidden City of of China and given a glimpse into one of the most complicated men in history as we watch him grow from infant ruler to broken conflicted commoner. Utterly remarkable in every respect from the stellar cast and performances (including John Lone as the adult Pi Yu, Peter O'Toole as his tutor and friend and the luminous Joan Chen as the long-suffering first wife) to the breath-taking scenic views of the palaces and court-life that are non-existent.
