Not funny enough

The movie had a good theme and an all-star cast. The old school Steve Carell was juxtapositioned against the new school Jim Carey. The theme was the coarsening of society. The cast and acting were good. The only weakness was that the material just wasn't funny enough.

Prest-O Change-O....Poof! The laughs have disappeared!

I went in ready to laugh 'till I had tears in my eyes, but I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the movie, but it lacked the big laughs I was expecting. There were a few magic tricks I was awed by (only a few). Jim Carrey's "Chris Angel" type character was morbid and gross. (Loved the hair though!) I did like the journey that Steve Carell's character went through and the ending was nice. I was glad their "magical friendship" was saved. Olivia Wilde was beautiful as usual, but I felt her character lacked a reason for being there. She never would have stuck around in real life. But - if you are looking for a mindless way to spend 2 hours of your afternoon, and if you are a Steve Carell fan, then I recommend this movie. It was OK.

The worst ever

What a waste of good talent, great actors looking ridiculous in costumes and a weak story line. The only enjoyable parts were the beginning 5 minutes and Alan Arkins scenes

Magic is funny

If you've thought about seeing this movie, go see it. It's not going to knock your socks off, but if you thought it looked funny, you'll probably enjoy it like I did. It took me back to my days of performing out of a magic kit as a child and my dreams of being a magician. What's great about this movie is that it doesn't try to be something it's not. It's there for entertainment and to make you smile. You'll laugh, you'll appreciate your friends, you'll question what magic really is and what it's for, and why we're obsessed with the ridiculous (and sometimes grotesque) stunts we call "illusion" today. The cast is great, the acting is fun, and the underlying message about friendship being more important than fame and popularity is heartwarming in it's own goofy way. If you're on the fence, maybe wait and rent it. If you're looking for a good time and thought the previews were funny, it will make you smile and send you home appreciating those you love.

I am not a person that is sensitive to movies, but this is out right terrible. the stunts that jim karry does makes your skin crawl. putting his arm in fire, laying on hot coals telling people you smell my flesh burning, cutting his face open with a knife and then pulling a card out thru his bloody skin. yea, and if that is not enough then he tells the audience to hold their children up high so they can see, while he drills into his head with and electric drill. grouse.. the other magicians are a disgrace to the profession. it shows that all they are interested in is getting women into bed. with all types of snide sexual remarks. I am not a prude, I have watched action movies and I am a male, but this is not for children., oh I forgot on other thing Jim does, he drives a nail into a table with his head, and also after a boy on his birthday is given a Yorkshire terrier Jim karry takes the dog and crushes it in his hands making the boy cry. bad movie
