Michael Shannon is perfect as the Iceman. This is a violent movie .It reminded me of the book the Westies .There are some similarities.Winona Ryder is good as the Icemans wife. She did not have a clue about what her husband did.Ray Liota is the Mafia contact who enlists the Iceman. He looks like he just stepped out of "Cop Land" into this movie. All in all this is a fast paced movie and yes it was a true story.

Michael Shannon was very good and Ray Liota was good too, but the bottom line is this is just another gangsta movie...nothing outstanding here..wait till it.s free on cable.

Michael Shannon was a fantastic catch to portray Richard "Iceman" Kuklinski, but his talents can't save this flop of a movie. The movie is represented as being "based on a true story", but the story told by the movie only slightly resembles the story of Kuklinski's life as told in his biography. Why the writers felt that it was necessary to deviate from the story is anyone's guess, as the book tells a much better story than the movie. The movie was choppy and amateurishly edited. Ray Liotta was unconvincing as Roy DiMeo, and the rest of the cast was week as well - Winona Ryder did a passable job as Kuklinski's wife, but Shannon is the star of this show. Bottom line - if you're a Michael Shannon fan, you MIGHT like the movie, but otherwise save your time and money.

I didn't realize that this film was based on a true story until after I started to watch it. It's basically the life story of a cold, hardworking man who ultimately gets identified by the mafia as a killer and gets hired. He rapidly builds a body count from one contract to the next while building a loving family and home. Ultimately, his family finally does matter to him, which he recognizes as the only thing he has really cared about, or regretted hurting, in his life. I love the way this movie covers several decades, complete with cars, clothes, and hair styles from each period. The whole cast is top notch, including Ray Liotta. Michael Shannon is perfect in the role as the Iceman. He really is making a name for himself as a villain.

Tough, Lean, Mob Movie with a Spellbinding Performance by Michael Shannon

It won't come as a surprise to anyone how good Michael Shannon is at portraying The Ice Man’s dual nature. The ultimate Jekyll and Hyde, equal parts callous and merciless sociopath exuding cold-blooded menace then flipping a switch to devoted husband and father, the entire movie turns on Shannon’s mesmerizing performance. Every move, every twitch is fine-tuned so that even in the quietest moments, a barely concealed rage is simmering just below the surface. It boils over at unexpected times and doesn’t when we think it will, thus keeping the audience off balance. It’s not Goodfellas, but it doesn’t aspire to be. It is a tough, lean, mob movie, completely evocative of time and place with a spellbinding performance by Michael Shannon that alone is worth the price of a ticket.
