A powerful concept undermined by success. In practice a violent and indulgent critique by for and about people who watch too much television. Not being familiar with the franchise and much of reality tv didn't help, but I both stepped out and fell asleep in the first hour. The cultural references and the antique high-speed train are great, but the pieces don't fit together very well IMHO. A loud twenty-first century high-speed train decked out inside like a nineteenth century parlor car, sort of Harry Potter whimsy in the midst of incredible malevolence, for instance. They fly star trek vehicles with steam-shovel retrieval buckets. There are science fiction cities, star wars storm troopers, and medieval public floggings. None of this seems to go anywhere but on to the next sequel.

Catching Fire was amazing, beautiful, powerful! The entire plot of the book was seamlessly captured in such a way that it could easily stand on its own. The actors, the script, and the visuals worked in perfect harmony to create lasting moments. Every scene was quick, important, and emotional. The plot moved at the perfect rate and didn't waste time on long, dramatic transitions. It was perfect. Every movie based on a book could use a lesson from Catching Fire.

I loved this movie. I would have to give it 5 out of 5 stars which I rarely ever do. I would agree with other reviews in that it did not seem any where close to an over 2 hour 26 min. movie. Didn't even feel like 2 hours.
Highly recommend this movie. I have not read the books so I don't know how the film compared to the book.

I'm not the biggest Hunger Games fan but I have enjoyed watching the movies. Catching Fire seemed to go by very quickly. At parts it seemed rushed, but I suppose that was necessary to prevent it from being 4+ hours long. I'm told that it stays pretty true to the book and the hardcore fan should love it and the causal fan should definitely enjoy it.
