The Hunger Games Movie Guide

What Is Your Favorite Movie of 2013?

By: Christopher Campbell on January 1, 2014 at 12:32PM Comments (18)

You've seen all the lists of the best films of the year. As usual, they're filled with a lot of titles from the past month, maybe some that you haven't gotten out to see yet, or some that still aren't even playing near you (Spike Jonze's wonderful sci-fi love story Her, for instance, doesn't open wide until next week). Other "best" titles include critically acclaimed works that just aren't your sort of thing -- and that's okay.

Let the experts and the Academy decide what is the best movie of 2013. You can still have a favorite movie of the year that fits your personal taste, regardless of what the professionals think of it. Did you have the most fun at the theater this year with Fast & Furious 6? Did you enjoy nothing more at the movies in the past 12 months than another outing with Iron Man, Katniss Everdeen or Gru and the Minions?

The difference between best and favorite isn't just about expert opinion and popular choice, either. Some films are really great but not something we want to ever watch again -- powerful but painful works like 12 Years a Slave and The Act of Killing. Favorites tend to be those we go back to over and over, like maybe a light animated feature such as Frozen or a silly comedy such as Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

Of course, your favorite could correspond with the "best" movies, too. Some very popular titles among the awards contenders for 2013 include Saving Mr. Banks, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Gravity.

Now's the time, with a new year upon us, for you to be heard. We want to know what your favorite movie of 2013 is. Feel free to tell us what it is you love about it, too.

This is a pretty difficult decision. I find that with each passing year, the big tent-pole blockbusters (Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, Thor: The Dark World) are becoming more and more tired. There's very little new life being breathed into franchise films, which is a shame, since I firmly believe any concept for a film can work if it's executed correctly. I'm beginning to lean towards Gravity as my pick for best of the year for that reason. Plenty of films have been set in space before, but this was probably the first to fully capture what it would be like. I saw it in IMAX 3-D, and it felt less like a movie and more like an experience. Here's to hoping more blockbusters manage to leave more of an impact on me in 2014.

42: The Jackie Robinson Story, Frozen, World War Z, The Hobbit, The Croods. I do have to say this was a better year for movies. I hope 2014 will live up to a good year at the movies.

I would have to say Silver Lining Playbook was by far the most entertaining film i saw last year that comes to mind. I have a new appreciational for both Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper who also did a stellar performance in American Hustle! 12 years a slave and the Book Thief were amazing films that took me to another time and moved me deeply. Both these Films are Oscar worthy and whose story I will never forget and thats saying alot. Geoffrey Rush never disappoints me, in my book one of the best actors in Hollywood.
