Bloated Excess

By ordinarymind

Too much of a good thing can be no good at all. The mind numbing excess of Jackson's production is perfectly mirrored in Smaug's boundless hoard of gold and jewels ---wealth so great it ceases to be wealth at all and turns into a meaningless heap. The video-game-ification of the movies continues at its breakneck pace. Tolkien has been buried alive, barely breathing, beneath all this special effects "treasure."

I usually LOVE this type of movie

I usually LOVE this type of movie. I'm a big fan of LOTR and the whole fantasy genre. But this movie, despite the great richness of it's scenery, is dull and streches into boredom. My daughters, HUGE fans who've been looking forward to it for a year, wouldn't quite admit it was bad but even they were dissappointed. And I think what they liked best was the Sherlock tie in with Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug and Freeman as Bilbo. They liked the new Tauriel character but I think they were just latching onto something positive. My favorite part is that my husband is now doing the Smaug voice which horrifies my daughters. ;) The movie is dull, D-U-L-L, save your money.

It was like watching a segment of a story. Lot of action and running but not impressed with screenplay. I'm fan of The Lord of the Rings, but ...... the movie ends and you say uh!

It all depends on your faith in the book.

For those of you who are die-hard Tolkien fans - you are going to be very disappointed. Other than the name of the movie and perhaps 25% of the movie, it bears little resemblance to the book. Therefore, if we all take a deep breath and repeat the words that this movie is "loosely based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien" let's look at it from another perspective. If you have never read the book or maybe you read it once 20 years ago and you like the story, then you will probably love this movie. The special effects are incredible, especially if you see it in 3-D. We now have a new character and a love triangle just to toss a little romance into the story. The dragon Smaug is perhaps the best character in the entire movie and very well voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. We see Bilbo develop from meek Hobbit into a strong character. All highly recommended. As for the ending, remember it is a part 2 of 3, which never has a well-defined ending. You will be longing for part 3.

Terrible ending of desolation of smaug

I cant believe that they ended the movie where they did! Now we again have to wait months to see what happens. They could easily end at a different point in the story and still get people ready to come back for the next. What a wast of my time. Im going back to the book.
