Short and sweet:
HFR made everything look like I was watching a videotaped program or a soap opera
The Hobbit was a live-action recreation of the Rankin-Bass animated movie from the 70's. It didn't feel at all like The Lord of the Rings movies.

I am a big Tolkien fan and I didn't think Peter Jackson would be able to stretch The Hobbit into 3 movies, but An Unexpected Journey really delivered due to the spectacular chase scenes. It is actually shorter than the LOTR movies so that is a plus, and the only boring scene takes place in Rivendell and is about five minutes long. If The Hobbit #2 and #3 are anywhere as good as An Unexpected Journey was, I'd be thrilled with the job Jackson has done.
For people that said this movie was "jarring" in 3D I have no idea what they are talking about, as it was really terrific during the chase scenes.

I definitely recommend this movie to anyone and everyone, regardless of whether you read the book or not. The movie captivating and funny, and holds your attention throughout. It definitely didn't feel as long as it was, and was worth every minute.

I loved the movie.
The acting was superb, the film and landscape left you breathless. The high frame rate and 3D made it feel incredibly real, not fake like one has come to expect from most 3D movies.
After seeing it for the second time, I can say that this one is better than The Fellowship of the Rings was. If the rest of The Hobbit Trilogy is as good as this one, then I can say that The Hobbit Trilogy will be better than the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

I saw this in imax 3D and it was amazing and I usually don't like 3D movies at all. I highly recommend seeing this movie not only for the story itself, but for the quality of the images and experience you get seeing it in imax which makes it all the better. The movie is also quite close to the book which I'm very happy about and I can't wait for part 2 to see how the adventure continues and the real battle begins. Great for all ages.
