Took my 2 sons to see it opening day and it was truly awesome. The boys liked the tie in with the other movies even though it made the movie a bit off the book. You'll enjoy it.

I've been unimpressed with 3D in the past, but this was GREAT! The technology has gotten so much better, and was used very effectively in The Hobbit!
Good for ages 10 (mature) and up.

I had read reviews saying the movie was too long with a lot of unimportant stuff added to draw it out to 3 films. Being a big fan of Tolkien's books, I could't understand how a quick read like the hobbit could be drawn out to the length of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of the story not in the book interpreted for the movie, like the actual attack on the dwarf mountain by Smaug, and involvement of the wizard Radagast with Gandalf on the rising of the Necromancer. It's been many years since I read the Hobbit, but now I need to go back and read it again to get a handle on what was there and what is being added to this new story. Looking forward to Part II.

The Hobbit was everything I was expecting from Peter Jackson and I was not disappointed. The acting was excellent and the cinematography brilliant as ever. Like the other reviewers I wasn't sure about breaking The Hobbit into multiple installments, but it worked and I can't wait for the next one. My son is also a huge fan, and having watched the LOTR trilogy prior to seeing this movie, he kept asking when they'd find the ring and see Gollum...he was not disappointed either (and now wants LOTR Legos!).

I REALLY fell in love with Peter Jackson's classic retelling of J. R. R. Tolkien's prequel to the LOTR epic story line! The viewer really has to pay attention to the small details . . . so many set the stage for so many things in one of the Lord Of The Ring trilogy! Great movie making at it's best! DEFINITE Oscar contender! Not necessarily for kids younger than 13 or 14 . . . there is MUCH fantasy battle action and gore that may be disturbing to younger children!
